November is always a quiet month for the school. The Halloween motvents are over, the candy-high is lowering (a bit), and the Holiday parties are still a few weeks away. November is when many of our students are back into a regulated schedule of day-school, homework and hard training as they prepare for their next belts. We have 23 students invited to test for upcoming belts in November and December – always a busy time for student’s earning their new ranks.
Remembrance Day is a memorial day observed in Commonwealth of Nations member states since the end of the First World War to remember the members of their armed forces who have died in the line of duty. Hostilities formally ended “at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month” – a period of the day now noted for a minute of thoughtful consideration and silence. The red remembrance poppy has become a familiar emblem of Remembrance Day due to the poem “In Flanders Fields” written by Canadian physician Lieutenant-Colonel John McCrae.
Canadians are known for several key battles in World War 2 including the Battle of Vimy Ridge in which this single Canadian offensive amounted to the capture of more land, prisoners and armaments than any previous offensive. The 1915 Battle of Ypres was the first engagement of Canadian forces in the Great War, changed the Canadian perspective on war. Ypres exposed Canadian soldiers and their commanders to modern war, developing a reputation for aggressive trench raiding despite their lack of formal training and generally inferior equipment.
Respect is a critical quality at our school and thus we ask everyone to take a minute of thoughtful contemplation on Remembrance Day for all those individuals that fought in World War 1 and World War 2.
Purple and Blue Belt Test
The Purple and Blue Belt test will be Sunday December the 10th, starting at 10AM. The doors for the school will open at 9:30 AM. Full uniforms are required – clean and wrinkle free. The test is approximately 90-minutes and you should plan for 2 hours.
Black Belt Excellence
This months topic is gratitude. Gratitude is to be thankful. Gratitude is an attitude and an important part of emotional fitness and is a key component of positive psychological behaviour. We show gratitude through a thankful appreciation for what an individual receives, whether tangible or intangible. When we demonstrate gratitude without prompting from others, we acknowledge the goodness in our lives.
“Cultivate the habit of being grateful for every good thing that comes to you, and to give thanks continuously. And because all things have contributed to your advancement, you should include all things in your gratitude.”
― Ralph Waldo Emerson
Gratitude is a two stage process – we first must acknowledge the positive aspects in our life and then we must recognize the source of the positive influence. Thus gratitude is being thankful to others without the need for reciprocal acknowledgement. We can be grateful to other people, animals, the world, people in history, actions and events.
Student’s will learn a few simple ways to show gratitude including:
- Giving a compliment
- Leaving a thank-you note
- Helping someone out or volunteering your time
Our 2018 Weapon is the Nunchaku – this flashy weapon was made popular by the legendary Bruce Lee! This weapon will be featured in our Black Belt Tribe Training as well as two Weapon Workshops – the first in January followed by a second session in July. Participating students will learn a variety of methods in which the Nunchaku can be used including strikes, blocks, spinning, twirling, a full Nunchaku Set, Self-defence techniques and a great form.
Students will use the ActionFlex Nunchaku to develop skills in a safe and functional manner. We have worked with Century Martial Arts to get a great discount on this weapon for the month of November. We will be closed from January 1st (New Years) until 5th, re-opening for normal classes on the 8th. The first week is traditionally a week of low attendance so Lara and I will be taking advantage of this time to take a cruise around Mexico.
