Everyone comes to Durham Modern Martial Arts for different reasons. Some people want to improve their fitness while others want to be more empowered in their daily activities. Some join us to learn self-defense while others train to build their confidence. Our martial art classes for adults are benefit oriented and driven by your personal goals.
Our Kenpo program is a comprehensive approach that is not complicated. You can start at any age (Ray is 62 for example) and you do not have to work out before beginning our program (our classes will help you get in shape).
Our approach to the martial arts is built around three concepts: discipline, protection and empowerment. Traditionally these are referred to as body, mind and spirit. Through the art of Kenpo Karate individuals develop practical self-defense skills, leadership qualities, self-discipline, self-empowerment, great speaking skills, and more.
We teach traditional martial art values in a contemporary martial art with modern teaching methods and ideas.
Physical Fitness is one of the primary reasons people join the martial arts. You don’t need to already be fit to join our classes. Our classes will help you get in the best shape of your life.

We keep a pragmatic approach to self-defense in our martial art classes. Our student’s learn a comprehensive curriculum that includes striking, stand-up grappling, ground fighting and weapons for self-defense as well as for competition. All these elements are carefully balanced with a practical understanding of the martial art in regards to our legal system and social values.
